Overview

Craft as Living Knowledge: Expanded Tradition

What happens to a tradition when it is allowed to change from within? This talk uses the exhibition Expanded Tradition as a starting point to examine how artisans, designers, and artists in Mexico work with inherited techniques today. Their work does not treat tradition as something to preserve unchanged or to leave behind.

It treats it as a living body of knowledge that people keep revising. Through around one hundred works in five sections, the exhibition proposes a different way to think about authorship, innovation, and design

Speakers:

• Ana Elena Mallet, Independent curator and specializing in modern and contemporary Mexican and Latin American design. Distinguished Professor at the School of Architecture, Art and Design at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico

Moderator:

• Yousef Khacho, Consultant, Years of Culture
