Overview

Doha: A City in the Making

Doha’s skyline seems to tell a story of sudden transformation, but beneath its contemporary landmarks lies a much longer history of adaptation, experimentation and exchange. From the architecture of the pre-oil city and the modernist buildings of the 1950s–70s to today’s museums, cultural districts and ambitious urban projects, how has Doha negotiated the tension between local identity and global ambition? And as the city continues to evolve, what should be preserved, what should be reimagined, and what kind of architectural identity can emerge from a city that has always been shaped by outside influences as well as its own traditions?

• Dr. Sultana Al-Nabet, Assistant Professor of Urban Planning, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Qatar University
